HU Xiangqian: Spring has gone,blooms sway;people roam,birds don’t stray

MadeIn Visiting Artist in Residence (MVAIR) Program promotes research and supports artists in their creative process. The  residency provides artists with resources of time and space for open-ended investigation, experimentation, and collaboration to push back their own practical boundaries. The program aims to facilitate new methodologies of artistic creation and offer a catalyst for the diversity of art ecology. The current MVAIR artist is Hu Xiangqian. On the opening of the exhibition on October the 24th, the artist will do a live performance of  Spring has Gone, Blooms Sway; People Roam, Birds don’t Stray at MadeIn Art Museum.

Once, while passing by a field, I noticed that the crops were adorned with shimmering CDs, which I found quite interesting. Of course, I understood that farmers used the reflective quality of CDs to scare away birds.

However, I saw far beyond what is visible. In our fast-paced technological age, CDs were quickly made obsolete. Interestingly, they found new life and purpose in a field. I felt that this is much like our human bodies, which, in the face of technology and science, can quickly become obsolete and turn into waste.

Before our bodies reach that point, we must take action. Like the name of this piece, ” Spring has Gone, Blooms Sway; People Roam, Birds don’t Stray,” can we revive this ancient poem by reciting it over and over? I don’t have the answer, but I use action to delay the fate of my body becoming obsolete.

Hu Xiangqian

Born in Leizhou, Guangdong in 1983, Hu Xiangqian graduated from the 5th Studio of the Oil Painting Department at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 2007. Currently, he lives and works in Guangzhou.

Hu Xiangqian is best known for his performances, which are usually transmitted through video. His works usually stem from an intuitive desire, and he always holds the belief that only by experiencing the surrounding reality in a straightforward and authentic manner can one discover the unknown. Hu’s performance art is usually conveyed through video. The environment he has personally experienced and his reflection on the connection between the body, the performing artist, and performance itself serve as his sources of inspiration. With a heightened sensitivity to the contradictions and absurdities of life, his works skillfully emphasise the various differences present in our society, magnifying seemingly minor events into social signifiers.
