Liu Chengrui: Tiger’s Laughing Mouth

The current MVAIR artist is Liu Chengrui. Liu Chengrui’s creations revolve around the body, highlighting the perseverance and transcendence of the will to live through action, performance, painting, and writing.
The artist’s body during live performances is closely intertwined with the environment: plants, flying birds, the sky, the audience, abandoned factory buildings, and bodies silently bearing witness as they experience the passing of time from noon until sunset. This is also Liu Chengrui’s second action since the 2013 “Tiger’s Mouth” performance at the A4 Contemporary Arts Center in Chengdu.
MadeIn Visiting Artist in Residence (MVAIR) Program promotes research and supports artists in their creative process. The two-month residency provides artists with valuable resources of time and space for open-ended investigation, experimentation, and collaboration to push back their own practical boundaries. The program aims to facilitate new methodologies of artistic creation and offer a catalyst for the diversity of art ecology.

    Todos los Fuegos el Fuego,Performance Installation,Tiles, poems,Dimension variable,2023

The title of the work is derived from Julio Cortázar’s novel collection “All Fires the Fire”. The “fire” in the novel is both a curtain call for the burial of ancient Roman civilization and an elegy for the fragmented lives of people in the industrial age. The “fire” in this work has a similar metaphor, illuminating the ruined factory. The colorful poem manuscript points to the artist’s childhood under the prayer flags. In the meantime, the artist polished the sharp parts of the naturally fallen tiles at the museum residency with a file, then painted them white, namely, to make all tiles the Tile, “all fires (todos los fuegos)” the “Fire (Fuego)”, to unify, to put labor into result. The 58 selected poems were written during the residency at MadeIn Art Museum. The video documents Liu’s process of grinding off the sharp parts of the discarded tiles with a file at night. The audience can read and take away the colorful poems scattered on the floor.
