Qiu Ja: The Thicket: Site of Transience

MadeIn Art Musuem presents emerging artist Qiu Ja’s solo exhibition, The Thicket: Site of Transience, from June 22 to October 15, 2024. The exhibition will feature the artist’s latest series of work and her creative trajectory since 2017.

Qiu Ja believes that everything has a structure. In The Thicket: Site of Transience, he challenges himself to capture and create the so-called “chaos.” Through the constant battle between labor and skills, and materials, media, and time, the exhibition reveals the wonders and difficulties of the creative process, exploring our fascination with decadence. Qiu Ja spreads his materials out in a state of chaos and disorder, and through observation, invention, and exploration before the emergence of form, he waits for things to emerge through serendipitous encounters.

These works establish an organic and ambiguous relationship between the figurative and abstract. They are not intended to judge, preach, or convey emotions; they simply exist. Through the viewer’s gaze, associations, and emotions, these works may present characteristics of narratives.

About Qiu Ja:

Qiu Ja, born in 1977, in Shanghai, China, obtained a master’s degree from the Shanghai University College of Fine Arts in 2004. In 2015, he furthered his studies as a visiting scholar at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, UK. He currently lives and works in Shanghai. Qiu Ja’s works are a testament to his exploration of fundamental questions about sculpture, particularly the relationship between human and objects, and the most explicit, superficial, fundamental ways objects are created. By deconstructing and reassembling objects, he creates visual anomalies that enrich the dimensions of both reality and psychological space. His works are characterized by their complexity, inviting viewers to contemplate the creative process and the relationship between form and function.

Qiu Ja’s solo exhibitions and projects include “Exchange Notation,” MoCA Shanghai, MoCA Pavillion, Shanghai, 2024; “Into what has been there——Qiu Ja,” Liu Haisu Art Museum, Shanghai, 2018; “Rehearsal” at the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, 2018; and “Elemental Structures,” AroundSpace Gallery, Shanghai, 2018. His works have been exhibited at several important institutions, such as the China Art Museum, Fosun Foundation, MoCA Shanghai, Jing’an Sculpture Park, Suzhou Art Museum, China Sculpture Museum, and China Cultural Center in Brussels.
